AWAKE

AWAKE

An interactive pop-up exhibition for young adults, to encourage better sleep.

The brief

There is a direct connection between nightmares and the pandemic. Studies have shown that heightened stress, anxiety and contracting the virus can result in an increase in nightmares and disturbed sleep.

The brief for this project was to develop a solution or system which educated people about nightmares, helping to alleviate them and giving people a safe space to talk about their experiences.

QR code interactivity process

1. QR code is scanned from screen

2. Pop-up opens in browser, user enters message

3. Message is displayed on exhibition screen

The Awake exhibition runs at night, when people suffering from troubled sleep will need it most. My colour palette was based on colours found in the sunset to echo the peace and tranquility of dusk.

The visual language of the exhibition breaks the stereotypical nightmarish language of dark colours and scary monsters. I used fun shapes, icons and bright colours.

Awake App

The Awake sleep app contains tips for better sleep hygiene, information about causes of nightmares, a dream diary and an anonymous public forum for sharing stories and asking questions.

Here is an example of how the app’s loading screen would run. I wanted to show the fun personality of the branding by animating the icons.

Installation Display

I used Adobe Dimensions to create the models of the exhibition. This process enabled me to develop my 3D skills, and also overcome some obstacles such as visualising a projector’s light.

An example of one of the videos to be projected on the screen.

The pop-up consisted of three main components all targeted towards encouraging better sleep. These were the informative and interactive screen, the mobile app and the physical souvenirs.

Promotion and souvenirs

To promote the exhibition, I created poster designs to be displayed around the local area, as well as social media posts to help the exhibition reach a wider audience. The fun and inviting personality of the branding is echoed in the promotion to echo the same message of being open and sharing experiences.

As well as promotion, I created souvenirs from the exhibition including sleep eye mask and ear plugs, both to encourage users to have a more restful night’s sleep.
